Nevada Wildland Urban Interface and Defensible Space

NRS 472 establishes the Nevada Division of Forestry's authority over wildland fire protection on state and private forested lands. NRS 527.122 authorizes the State Forester Firewarden to designate wildfire hazard areas. Nevada has adopted the International Wildland-Urban Interface Code (IWUIC) by reference, enforced through local building departments. Defensible space requirements typically mandate 30 feet of cleared vegetation around structures, with extended 100-foot zones in high-hazard areas. The Living With Fire program coordinates outreach. During extreme fire weather, the Nevada Division of Forestry may issue statewide fire restrictions under NRS 527.130 that supersede local rules.

Failure to maintain defensible space or violations of state fire restrictions are misdemeanors under NRS 527, with cost recovery for suppression expenses.
