Rhode Island State Building Code for Sheds

The Rhode Island State Building Code, adopted under Title 23 Chapter 27.3, is administered by the State Building Code Standards Committee and applies uniformly in all 39 municipalities. Following the IRC, accessory structures not exceeding 200 square feet generally do not require a building permit, though they must still comply with setback and zoning rules established by the local municipality. Larger sheds require permits, foundations meeting frost-depth standards, and inspections. Local building officials enforce the state code; municipalities cannot adopt building requirements more or less stringent than the state code.

Building without a required permit may result in stop-work orders, fines up to $500 per day, and mandatory removal or compliance under R.I. Gen. Laws § 23-27.3-124.0.
