South Dakota Statewide Rule
Per SDCL 32-15-6, every motor vehicle on a South Dakota highway must be equipped with a muffler in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise, and no muffler cutout, bypass, or similar device may be used. Specific dBA limits, motorcycle exhaust standards, and engine-brake (Jake-brake) restrictions are set by municipalities under SDCL 9-29-1.
