South Dakota Statewide Rule
Per SDCL 32-30-12, a vehicle left unattended on any public road, highway, or highway right-of-way for longer than 24 hours without notifying the sheriff, highway patrol, or municipal officials is presumed abandoned and subject to removal. SDCL 32-30-12.1 expressly authorizes municipalities to modify this period by ordinance. Outside corporate limits, SDCL Chapter 32-30A governs sheriff-administered abandoned-vehicle disposition.
