Tennessee Vehicle Carry and Permitless Handgun Rules

Under T.C.A. 39-17-1307 and the permitless carry provisions, adults 21 and older (or qualifying 18-20 year-olds including military members) may transport and carry a loaded handgun in a private passenger vehicle or boat without an enhanced or concealed handgun permit. T.C.A. 39-17-1351 preserves enhanced and concealed permits for reciprocity and access to certain restricted areas. Carriers must lawfully possess the firearm, not be a prohibited person, and avoid posted off-limits locations such as schools, courthouses, and government buildings. Local governments cannot impose stricter vehicle carry rules due to T.C.A. 39-17-1314 statewide preemption.

Unlawful possession of a handgun in a vehicle by a prohibited person or in a posted location is a Class A misdemeanor or felony, with fines, jail, and possible permit revocation.
