Washington State Outdoor Burning Restrictions

Under RCW 70A.15.5090 (formerly RCW 70.94.6512), outdoor burning is prohibited in urban growth areas designated under the Growth Management Act, and in cities with populations of 10,000 or more. Recreational fires using clean firewood are generally permitted statewide if they comply with size limits (typically under 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet high). The Department of Ecology and local clean air agencies can issue burn bans during poor air quality or fire danger. Burning of garbage, plastics, treated wood, and yard debris is prohibited statewide under RCW 70A.15.5070.

Illegal outdoor burning carries civil penalties up to $10,000 per day under RCW 70A.15.3160 plus potential cleanup costs.
