Washington Firearms Vehicle Carry Rules

Under RCW 9.41.050, a person may not carry a pistol concealed on or about their person, or in any vehicle, unless they hold a valid Washington concealed pistol license (CPL). A loaded pistol in a vehicle is treated as concealed and requires a CPL even if the firearm is in a glove box, console, or under a seat. Without a CPL, a pistol transported in a vehicle must be unloaded and the ammunition stored separately or in a locked container. Long guns may be carried in vehicles without a permit but cannot be loaded while in or on a motor vehicle under RCW 77.15.460 when used for hunting purposes. RCW 9.41.290 preempts local vehicle carry ordinances, ensuring uniform rules statewide.

Carrying a loaded pistol in a vehicle without a CPL is a misdemeanor under RCW 9.41.050, punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. Repeat or aggravated violations may result in gross misdemeanor charges.
