West Virginia Bans Feeding Bears and Restricts Wildlife Baiting

Under WV Code §20-2 and Title 58 of the Code of State Rules, the Division of Natural Resources prohibits placement of food, salt, or attractants for black bears in any location. Unintentional bear attraction (such as accessible garbage or birdfeeders during active periods) may also trigger warnings or citations after notice. Baiting of deer is prohibited during firearm seasons in most counties, with limited archery exceptions. Feeding of waterfowl on public waters and feeding of elk in restoration areas are also restricted. Local governments may enact additional anti-feeding rules but cannot waive state DNR prohibitions.

Wildlife feeding violations are misdemeanors typically carrying fines from $20 to $300 plus court costs, with hunting license suspension possible for repeat or aggravated offenses.
