West Virginia Propane Storage Standards Under State Fire Code

West Virginia Code Section 29-3-5b authorizes the State Fire Commission to adopt the State Fire Code, which incorporates NFPA 58 Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code by reference. NFPA 58 governs container size limits, separation distances from buildings and property lines, and installation requirements. Residential propane cylinders generally must be located at least ten feet from buildings for tanks over 125 gallons. The State Fire Marshal enforces statewide standards. Bulk storage facilities require permits from the Fire Marshal under Code Section 29-3-13.

Violations are misdemeanors under W. Va. Code 29-3-12, punishable by fines up to $1,000, possible imprisonment up to thirty days, and civil orders requiring abatement.
