Wyoming Net Metering Caps Solar Systems at 25 Kilowatts

Wyoming's Net Metering Act (Wyo. Stat. sections 37-16-101 through 37-16-104) governs grid-connected solar statewide. A qualifying net metering system must use solar, wind, biomass or hydropower and have a generating capacity of not more than twenty-five (25) kilowatts, located on the customer-generator's premises. The electric utility must offer a bidirectional energy meter and cannot charge a net-metering customer any fee that raises the minimum monthly charge above others in the same rate class. Excess kilowatt-hours credit to the following month's bill; unused year-end credit is sold to the utility at its filed avoided cost. Actual construction permits are issued by local building departments, not the state.

Systems over twenty-five kilowatts do not qualify for net metering. The customer-generator must provide utility-approved lockable isolating equipment, and the Public Service Commission may adopt additional control and testing requirements for safety and system reliability.
