Above-ground pools in Sanger exceeding 18 inches deep or 5,000 gallons require a building permit. The same fencing and safety rules as in-ground pools apply.
The City of Sanger regulates above-ground pools under the California Building Code Appendix G. Pools exceeding 18 inches in water depth or holding more than 5,000 gallons of water require a building permit from the Sanger Building Division. Above-ground pools must comply with the same barrier requirements as in-ground pools under Health and Safety Code 115920 unless the pool wall itself serves as the barrier at a minimum height of 48 inches with a lockable ladder or steps that can be removed or secured when the pool is not in use. Electrical connections for pump and filtration systems must be installed by a licensed electrician and meet National Electrical Code requirements including GFCI protection. Above-ground pools must observe the same setback requirements as accessory structures, typically 5 feet from side and rear property lines. Water discharge from draining an above-ground pool must not flow onto neighboring properties or into the public right-of-way. The Sanger Building Division inspects electrical and barrier compliance.
Installing an above-ground pool without a required permit is a code violation subject to citation and mandatory removal or retroactive permitting. Electrical installations without GFCI protection or proper grounding can result in stop-work orders. Missing or non-compliant barriers carry the same penalties as in-ground pool violations. Fines start at $100 per violation.
