Spartanburg County, SC Swimming Pools & Spas: Fencing & Safety Requirements (2026)

Under the county's adopted 2024 ISPSC (§305.2), the top of the barrier must be at least 48 inches above grade measured on the side facing away from the pool, around the entire perimeter. On non-solid ground (grass, gravel) the gap under the barrier cannot exceed 2 inches; over concrete it cannot exceed 4 inches. Openings cannot pass a 4-inch sphere (§305.2.2). Vertical members on closely spaced fences must be no more than 1 3/4 inches apart, and chain-link mesh openings no more than 1 3/4 inches (§305.2.6-.8). Pool equipment outside the barrier must sit at least 36 inches from it (§305.2.10). Solid barriers cannot have handholds or footholds.
