Under Georgia's adopted residential code, an outdoor pool must be surrounded by a barrier at least 48 inches high measured from the outside, with no gaps or openings that let a 4-inch sphere pass through.
Georgia adopts International Residential Code Appendix G, which applies to pools in unincorporated Chatham County and Savannah. Section AG105.2 requires every outdoor in-ground, above-ground or on-ground pool, hot tub or spa to be surrounded by a barrier. The top of the barrier must be at least 48 inches above grade on the side facing away from the pool, with a maximum 2-inch gap under it. Openings must not allow passage of a 4-inch-diameter sphere. Where vertical and horizontal members are used, spacing is tightened to prevent a child climbing or squeezing through.
A barrier that fails Appendix G will not pass inspection, blocking the pool's certificate of completion; ongoing violations are cited by Chatham County code enforcement.
