Private pools in unincorporated Sonoma County must be isolated by a barrier meeting Sonoma County Code Ch. 7 and the California Swimming Pool Safety Act, including a 60-inch minimum enclosure height with self-closing/self-latching gates and no openings larger than 4 inches.
Per Sonoma County Code Chapter 7, Article II, § 7-15 and the County's CNI-044 Swimming Pool Safety Regulations, every new or remodeled private swimming pool or spa (water deeper than 18 inches) in unincorporated Sonoma County must be equipped with at least two of the seven drowning-prevention safety features defined in California Health & Safety Code Division 104, Part 10, Chapter 5, Article 2.5 (the Swimming Pool Safety Act). The isolation-enclosure option requires a minimum height of 60 inches, a maximum 2-inch clearance from the ground, no gaps that allow passage of a 4-inch sphere, and a smooth exterior free of handholds or footholds that could be climbed by a child under five. Access gates must open away from the pool and be self-closing and self-latching, with the latch release mounted no lower than 60 inches above the ground. Removable mesh fencing meeting ASTM F2286, paired with a self-closing/self-latching lockable gate, is also expressly permitted as an enclosure alternative.
Final building inspection — and lawful use of the pool — is withheld until the barrier and other Article 2.5 safety features are verified by Permit Sonoma. Operating a non-compliant pool can lead to permit revocation, stop-work orders, and code-enforcement penalties under Sonoma County Code Chapter 1 (general penalty: misdemeanor or infraction, up to $1,000 per day per violation).
