Rohnert Park does not require a building permit for residential fences, but fences must comply with Chapter 17.14 (Fence, Wall, and Landscape Standards) of the Zoning Code. Fences, walls, hedges, and vegetation cannot exceed 3 feet within the clear vision triangle at corners and driveways per Β§ 17.14.040, and standard residential height limits apply outside that triangle. The Planning Department at 130 Avram Avenue handles questions.
Title 17 (Zoning) of the Rohnert Park Municipal Code governs fences via Chapter 17.14 β Fence, Wall, and Landscape Standards. A separate building permit is not required for the construction of a residential fence, but the fence must conform to the height, location, and material rules in Chapter 17.14 and to applicable zoning-district setbacks in Chapter 17.06. Under Β§ 17.14.040 (Clear Vision Triangle), no fence, wall, hedge, or other structure or vegetation may exceed 3 feet in height within the clear vision triangle at intersections and driveways, and tree canopies inside the triangle must be at least 8 feet above grade. The Planning Department at 130 Avram Avenue (planning@rpcity.org, 707-588-2226) provides plan review and confirmation of district-specific fence heights and setbacks. The city's Fence Standards handout is the standard reference issued by the Planning Department.
Fences built outside Chapter 17.14 standards (height, sight-triangle, prohibited materials, or setback) are zoning violations. Code Enforcement can issue a notice of violation requiring correction. Continued non-compliance is subject to administrative citation under Title 1 of the Municipal Code.
