A Polk County pool must be enclosed by a four-foot-high barrier (wall, fence, or house wall). Fences used as a barrier must be at least 48 inches high, with gates self-closing and self-latching, and no opening allowing a 4-inch sphere to pass.
Per the county handout: "A pool must either be enclosed with a four (4) foot high barrier consisting of a wall, fence or part of a house wall such as the rear wall." "Fences installed as a barrier are required to be at least 48" in height. If a gate is installed to access the fenced in area, then the gate is required to be self-closing." Openings may not pass a 4-inch sphere; the gap under the fence may not exceed 2 inches over grass/gravel or 4 inches over hard surfaces. When a gate is in a barrier "it must be self-closing and self-latching." An ASTM F1346 powered safety cover can replace the barrier.
Failing barrier or gate final inspection means the pool cannot be approved for use; enforced by Polk County Planning & Development code enforcement.
