Sparks requires a 48-inch minimum barrier around outdoor pools and spas under the adopted 2024 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code. Gates must open outward, self-close, and self-latch, and barrier openings cannot pass a 4-inch sphere.
Sparks enforces ISPSC Section 305 for residential pool and spa barriers. The barrier must be at least 48 inches high measured on the side facing away from the pool. Vertical clearance under the barrier cannot exceed 2 inches over grass or gravel and 4 inches over a solid surface, and openings must reject a 4-inch sphere. Pedestrian gates must open outward away from the pool, be self-closing and self-latching, and accommodate a locking device. A dwelling wall may form part of the barrier with compliant door protection. A fence permit is required.
Non-compliant barriers must be corrected before the pool is filled or used; the final inspection is withheld until the barrier passes. Enforced by Sparks Building & Safety.
