Under the ISPSC, residential spas must have an electrical permit covering the disconnect and GFCI circuit, with equipotential bonding. A lockable safety cover certified to ASTM F1346 is accepted as the required barrier; otherwise, the spa must be enclosed by a 48-inch pool-style barrier. Spas located on a deck must be structurally evaluated for the weight of the water. Indoor spas require ventilation and corrosion-resistant materials. Spas may not discharge to the sanitary sewer without approval from DWM; most drain to the yard or stormwater with dechlorinated water.
Electrical code violations are enforced by the Office of Buildings. Missing covers or barriers make the spa uninspectable for final permit closeout.
