Atlanta bans barbed wire, razor ribbon, and electrified fences in residential zones. Historic districts restrict materials to traditional styles - wood, wrought iron, or masonry.
Atlanta Code Ch. 158 restricts fence materials in residential areas to non-hazardous, non-electrified types. Barbed wire and razor wire are limited to certain industrial and commercial perimeters with at least 6 feet of clearance above grade. Electrified fences are banned in residential zones and restricted elsewhere. In historic districts governed by Ch. 16 and reviewed by the Atlanta Urban Design Commission, approved materials typically include wood pickets, wrought iron, masonry, or hedge. Chain-link is discouraged and often prohibited in front yards in historic neighborhoods. Vinyl, though common elsewhere, is sometimes restricted in historic districts. Unusual materials such as corrugated metal or sheet plastic may require design review in any zone.
Prohibited materials must be removed or replaced. Historic district violations can trigger fines up to $1,000 per day.
