Sandy Springs, GA Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Adopted January 15, 2019 by Ord. No. 2019-01-05, § 38-65 flatly bars four fence types citywide: electric or electrified fencing, barbed wire, concertina (razor) wire, and any fence made solely of horizontal metal wires. The prohibition reaches three separate acts, to "construct," to "erect," or to "maintain" one of the banned fence types, so a fence that predates the 2019 ordinance is not grandfathered if the owner continues to maintain it after the effective date. The section sits in chapter 38's offenses article rather than the zoning code, meaning it is enforced as a citywide police-power prohibition rather than a district-by-district development standard, and it applies uniformly to residential and commercial property alike since the text draws no distinction by zoning district.

Section 38-65 does not itself set a fine, so a violation defaults to the Code's general penalty at § 1-10(c): up to a $1,000 fine, imprisonment for up to six months, confinement at labor for up to 30 days, or a combination of these, and because maintaining a banned fence is a continuing condition, each day it remains up counts as a separate offense under § 1-10(d)(1). The Sandy Springs Police Department and code enforcement staff are responsible for identifying and citing noncompliant fences.
