Sandy Springs regulates amplified sound the same way it regulates any other noise source under Code of Ordinances Sec. 38-87. , no person may operate a stereo, speaker system or other sound source that creates a sound level in a residential zone exceeding 55 dB(A), or ten dB(A) above the ambient level, whichever is higher. , the daytime ceiling rises to 65 dB(A), again measured at or outside the property boundary. In multifamily buildings, the police department can measure sound from common areas or neighboring units at the request of the affected owner or tenant, taken at least four feet from the nearest wall, ceiling or floor with doors closed.

Several activities are exempt from the daytime cap, including school band practices and athletic events, gardening and landscaping (subject to separate blower rules), church bells, and constitutionally protected political or religious gatherings. Code enforcement officers and police officers enforce the chapter and must complete noise-measurement training through the Institute of Noise Control Engineering or an equivalent program before they can issue a citation under Sec. 38-85. Anyone who needs to exceed these limits, for a block party sound system or similar, must submit a written variance request to the director of community development and the chief of police at least 48 hours before the event, per Sec. 38-92; an administrative variance covers one 24-hour period, with a second period available to commercial applicants.
