Hot tubs and spas in Mecklenburg County require an electrical permit and must have a lockable safety cover meeting ASTM F1346 in lieu of a fence. Minimum 5-foot separation from structures recommended and GFCI protection required.
NC Residential Code AG105.5 exempts spas and hot tubs from the 48-inch barrier requirement when equipped with an ASTM F1346 lockable safety cover. Electrical feed must be on a dedicated 240V GFCI circuit with emergency disconnect within sight of the tub but at least 5 ft away. Spa plumbing is exempt from septic permit recalculation. HOAs in unincorporated parts of the county may still require ARC approval for visual impact.
