In unincorporated Calaveras County, a building permit from the County Building Department is required to construct an in-ground or above-ground residential pool or spa. Residential pools and spas in unincorporated Calaveras County are permitted through the County Building Department (891 Mountain Ranch Road, San Andreas; 209-754-6390), which enforces the 2022 California Building Code. When a building permit is issued, the State Swimming Pool Safety Act (Health and Safety Code 115920 et seq.) drowning-prevention and barrier requirements also apply. The County's Environmental Management Agency Pool and Spa Program regulates only public pools, not private residential ones.
