Citrus County, FL Trash & Recycling: Bin Placement Rules (2026)

Citrus County Code § 82-76 defines two categories of garbage receptacle. An automated garbage receptacle is a container up to 96 gallons that is watertight, covered to protect its contents, and built to be collected by automated trucks; the code sets no weight limit on an automated cart's contents, only that it not be overfilled. A manual garbage receptacle must hold no more than 45 gallons and no less than 15 gallons, be free of jagged or sharp edges, watertight, fitted with two handles or a bail for lifting, and have a tight-fitting, watertight cover to keep out flies, insects, rats and other animals; a manual can plus its contents may not weigh more than 50 pounds when full.

A waterproof, securely closable bag of a type approved by the coordinator can substitute for a manual can. Section 82-107 requires the collector to pick up solid waste placed at curbside in these receptacles up to the maximum weight per receptacle, and customers must keep their containers accessible so pets or other obstructions don't interfere with pickup, per § 82-109. Trespassing onto a neighbor's property to reach a container is barred absent written permission from both owners. These specifications apply only to collection in unincorporated Citrus County; Crystal River and Inverness set their own container rules.
