Summary
Citrus County Code § 82-107(1) bars residential trash collection on county-designated holidays and on any day the sanitary landfill is closed. The county's 2026 landfill schedule prints Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26, and Christmas Day, Friday, December 25, as CLOSED. Your collector must tell you the next scheduled collection day at least ten days before the holiday.
(1)Hours and days of collection. The collector shall pick up and deliver to the solid waste disposal facility, the solid waste placed at curbside in garbage receptacles up to the maximum weight of 50 pounds per receptacle. ... In the case of an emergency, as designated by the coordinator, to be later evidenced by a written memorandum confirming the approval, collections shall be permitted at times outside those allowed in chapter 21. No collection shall occur on Sundays except in the time of emergency. No collection shall occur on county-designated holidays or other days wherein the sanitary landfill is closed. At least ten days prior to such collection holiday, the collector shall notify all customers whose normal collection day falls upon such holidays that no collection services will be provided on such holiday and the date of the next scheduled collection day.

Full Breakdown
Section 82-107(1) sets two triggers for a skipped route: a county-designated holiday, or any other day when the sanitary landfill is closed. The code names no holiday and prints no date, so the calendar comes from the county's own lists: the Solid Waste Holiday Schedule 2026 for the landfill and the Citrus County Holidays page for Board of County Commissioners offices.
Thanksgiving: the landfill schedule prints Thursday, November 26, 2026 as CLOSED, so the no-collection rule applies that day. Friday, November 27 is listed as the day after Thanksgiving, with the landfill closing at 2:30 pm, the administrative office closed and no hazardous waste drop-off. The county holiday page lists a Thanksgiving Holiday of Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27.
Christmas and New Year's: Christmas Eve, Thursday, December 24, is listed with the landfill closing at 2:30. Christmas Day, Friday, December 25, is CLOSED all day, and the county holiday page lists a Christmas Holiday of Thursday, December 24 and Friday, December 25. New Year's Eve, Thursday, December 31, is listed with the landfill closing at 2:30 pm. New Year's Day appears only for 2026, as Thursday, January 1, 2026, CLOSED. Neither county page posts a 2027 date, so nothing printed confirms what happens on Friday, January 1, 2027.
The pages do not say whether routes run on the days the landfill closes at 2:30. Those are partial-day closings, so your collector's notice settles them.
Make-up day: Section 82-107(1) prints no make-up date. The collector must tell every customer whose normal collection day falls on the holiday, at least ten days ahead, the date of the next scheduled collection day. Section 82-103(b) requires the same ten days' notice of any alteration in the collection schedule. Under Section 82-105, a complaint received on the day preceding a legal holiday or on a Saturday is serviced on the next working day.
No collection occurs on Sundays except in the time of emergency, which the coordinator designates. Section 82-76 defines a collector as an entity authorized to provide solid waste collection services in the unincorporated area of the county, and Section 82-101(a) makes it unlawful to provide residential or commercial collection there without a certification.
Violations & Fines
The duty falls on the collector, not the customer. Under Section 82-77(a) the coordinator can schedule a hearing before the county administrator on probable cause, after at least ten days' notice by registered or certified mail. The administrator can levy fines up to $500.00 per violation and suspend or revoke the collector's certification. A petition for board of county commissioners review must be noticed within 30 days after the order of penalties.
