Bernalillo County requires trash carts placed curbside with lids closed and 3 feet of clearance from obstructions. Carts must be removed within 24 hours after collection and stored out of view from the public right-of-way.
Under Bernalillo County Code Chapter 58 (Solid Waste), residents must place carts at the curb or alley edge by 7 AM on pickup day with lids fully closed and handles toward the house. Carts must be at least 3 feet from other carts, parked vehicles, mailboxes, fire hydrants, and utility poles to allow automated arm access. Carts must be retrieved within 24 hours after collection and stored behind the front building line or screened from public view between pickups. City of Albuquerque rules under ROA 1994 Β§9-10-1-6 mirror these requirements. Overfilled carts (lid not closing) may be left or assessed an overload fee. Contaminated recycling carts are tagged and skipped. Carts placed on sidewalks blocking ADA access are a violation of ADA and county ordinance.
Cart left out past 24 hours after pickup: written warning, then $25 to $100 per occurrence under Ch. 58. Overfilled cart: skip or overload fee. Blocking sidewalk/ADA: immediate code enforcement notice.
