Albuquerque's Solid Waste Management Department requires specific cart placement for automated collection. Carts must be at the curb by 7:00 AM on collection day, placed with handles facing the house, and positioned at least 3 feet from any obstacles. Carts must be retrieved by the end of the collection day.
Automated collection trucks use mechanical arms that require precise cart placement. Carts must be placed at the curb or alley edge (depending on collection route) with the handles and wheels facing the house and the lid opening toward the street. Each cart must have 3 feet of clearance on all sides from other carts, parked vehicles, mailboxes, trees, utility poles, and other obstacles. Carts must not block sidewalks or pedestrian access. Heavy items should be placed at the bottom of the cart. Lids must be fully closed β overfilled carts may be skipped. After collection, carts must be returned to their storage location behind the front building line.
Improperly placed carts may not be collected by the automated truck. Carts left at the curb past collection day may result in a code enforcement notice. Blocking sidewalks with carts can result in complaints and enforcement action.
