Albuquerque provides curbside trash, recycling, and green waste collection through the Solid Waste Management Department. Residential collection is on a weekly schedule with assigned collection days by neighborhood. The city uses an automated cart system requiring residents to use city-issued containers.
Each residential address is assigned a specific collection day. Trash is collected weekly using blue-lidded carts. Recycling is collected every other week using yellow-lidded carts. Green waste (yard trimmings) is collected weekly during spring through fall using green carts. Carts must be placed at the curb with handles facing the house and at least 3 feet from obstacles including other carts, parked cars, mailboxes, and utility poles. All waste must be inside the cart with the lid closed. Excess trash that does not fit in the cart will not be collected. Residents can request additional carts for an extra monthly fee. Bulky item collection is available by appointment.
Contaminated recycling carts (wrong materials) may not be collected and receive a tag explaining the issue. Persistent contamination may result in recycling service suspension. Improperly placed carts may be skipped. Trash placed outside of carts in bags is generally not collected.
