Albuquerque provides curbside single-stream recycling through the Solid Waste Management Department. Recycling is collected every other week in yellow-lidded carts. The city accepts paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and containers, metal cans, and glass in a single-stream system. Contamination of recycling carts is a significant concern.
Albuquerque uses single-stream recycling where all accepted materials go in one cart. Accepted materials include paper and cardboard (flattened), plastic bottles and containers (#1 and #2), aluminum and steel cans, and glass bottles and jars. Materials must be clean, dry, and loose (not bagged). Items NOT accepted include plastic bags, Styrofoam, food-contaminated items, electronics, batteries, and hazardous waste. Contaminated carts may be tagged and not collected. The city operates a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) for sorting. Large quantities of cardboard can be taken to convenience centers. Multi-family properties must provide recycling containers for residents.
Contaminated recycling carts receive an educational tag and may not be collected. Repeated contamination may result in suspension of recycling service. Multi-family properties failing to provide recycling access may face code enforcement action.
