Kansas City has specific rules for placement of trash and recycling bins on collection day. Carts must be placed at the curb in the proper orientation with handles facing the house. Bins must be accessible to collection trucks and removed from the curb after collection.
On collection day, trash and recycling carts should be placed at the curb with the wheels and handle facing the house (opening toward the street). Carts must be spaced at least 3 feet apart and 3 feet from mailboxes, parked cars, and other obstructions. Do not place carts behind parked cars or under low-hanging branches. Carts should be on a level surface at the curb or edge of the street. On non-collection days, carts must be stored out of public view β behind the house, in a garage, or in a screened area. The city issues a standard 96-gallon cart for trash and a separate cart for recycling.
Improperly placed carts may not be collected. Carts left at the curb beyond collection day may result in a code enforcement notice. Carts blocking sidewalks or the street may be cited as a public nuisance.
