Nashville residents must place trash and recycling carts at the curb with handles facing the house and lids closed. Carts should be set out no earlier than 4 PM the day before collection and retrieved by 7 PM on collection day. Carts must be stored out of public view between collection days.
Metro Public Works requires specific cart placement for automated collection trucks. Carts must be placed within 3 feet of the curb, at least 3 feet from mailboxes, vehicles, and other carts. Handles must face the house and lids must be closed. Carts placed incorrectly may not be serviced. Between collection days, carts must be stored behind the front building line of the home, not visible from the street if possible. Properties with shared driveways or limited curb space should contact Metro Public Works for placement guidance.
Carts left at the curb beyond the allowed window or stored in front yards may receive property standards warnings. Improperly placed carts may be skipped by collection crews.
