County Code 8.12.130 sets where containers go for collection: residential containers must be placed within 20 feet of where the hauler's vehicle can park, and multi-family/commercial containers within 10 feet. Containers may not sit in the roadway right-of-way without an encroachment permit. Collection runs 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. (8.12.140).
Bin placement for collection in unincorporated Calaveras County is governed by Section 8.12.130 of the County Code. To facilitate collection in community areas, the customer must place solid waste collection containers no greater than twenty feet from the nearest point where the hauler's vehicle can reasonably be parked, measured along the path the hauler must walk to carry the container. For multiple-dwelling buildings, apartments, and commercial or industrial premises, standard containers must be placed no greater than ten feet from the nearest point the hauler can park. Drop-box (debris box) containers are located by agreement between customer and hauler, but drop-boxes may not be stored within the roadway right-of-way unless an encroachment permit has been obtained from the Department of Public Works. Collection timing is limited by Section 8.12.140, which prohibits any solid waste collection before 6:00 a.m. and after 8:00 p.m. unless otherwise authorized by the Board. Containers themselves must meet the standards in 8.12.070 (vector-resistant, tight-fitting lids) and must be stored on the premises between collections in a sanitary manner under 8.12.040 so they do not attract vectors or create a nuisance. Recyclables may be set out in open containers under 8.12.080 as long as they don't generate litter.
Improper placement or storage of containers is an infraction under 8.12.570 (up to $50 first, $100 second within a year, $250 additional), with each day a separate offense. Storing a drop-box in the road right-of-way without an encroachment permit violates 8.12.130 and may also trigger Public Works enforcement. Containers left out creating litter or obstruction can be a nuisance under Chapter 8.06.
