Fairfax City offers free curbside bulk trash collection for residential customers on the same day as regular trash pickup. Residents may place large items such as furniture, mattresses, and small appliances at the curb by 6 AM and should report the pickup in advance when possible. Items containing refrigerants, tires, and construction debris are excluded from bulk service.
Bulk waste collection is included in the residential solid waste service fee and is handled the same day as regular trash. Acceptable bulk items include couches, chairs, tables, mattresses and box springs (bagged in plastic to prevent bed bug spread), small non-refrigerant appliances (toasters, microwaves), rugs rolled and tied under four feet long, and bagged bulk yard debris exceeding normal cart capacity. Residents are asked to place items at the curb by 6 AM and to call Public Works or use the collection app when putting out unusually large loads so the crew can staff appropriately. Items containing refrigerants (refrigerators, freezers, AC units, dehumidifiers) require refrigerant removal with a certification tag before curbside collection and are often routed to the I-66 Transfer Station instead. Construction and demolition debris, concrete, dirt, rock, automotive parts, tires, and household hazardous waste are excluded and must be taken to the I-66 Transfer Station or disposed of privately. There is no per-item fee for accepted bulk items at the curb, but illegal dumping or setting out excluded material is subject to Code Administration enforcement and cleanup cost recovery.
