Hoboken, NJ Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Section 110-14, "Odd- and large-shaped objects," governs bulk waste in Hoboken: anything too big or oddly shaped to fit into a standard refuse container, or that weighs more than 60 pounds, cannot simply be left at the curb on a normal collection day. It has to be placed out only at the location and time set by an appointment made directly with the Department of Public Works, the same department that administers the rest of Chapter 110. The section adds a safety requirement specific to old appliances: doors have to be removed from stoves, ovens, refrigerators and any other item that has a locking door, so a child cannot become trapped inside a discarded appliance while it waits for pickup.

The bulk-item rule sits alongside two related precollection standards in the same article: § 110-13 requires tree trimmings, hedge clippings and lumber to be cut to no more than four feet in length and tied in bundles no more than two feet thick, and § 110-16 requires fluorescent and mercury lamps to be wrapped and labeled before disposal. Whoever sets out an oversized item without an appointment, or leaves an appliance door attached, is treated the same as any other Chapter 110 violation: liability falls on the owner, agent, tenant or occupant under §§ 110-30 and 110-32, and the Director may direct the garbage contractor to refuse to collect a noncompliant item under § 110-22.
