Lancaster County, SC Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Section 12-61 defines the two waste streams the county regulates at its container sites. Household garbage means putrescible animal and vegetable waste, paper, tin cans and glass, including crushed cardboard boxes, the only material Section 12-62 allows inside a county trash container. Rubbish is defined separately and broadly: pieces of furniture, appliances, water heaters, mattresses and bed springs, building materials, bricks, concrete, rocks, stumps, trees, brush, limbs, auto parts, machine parts, tires, or dead animals that are byproducts of residential living. Section 12-62 bars placing rubbish in or around a county trash container at all; instead, rubbish other than dead animals must go to designated rubbish areas the county administrator establishes at convenient locations around the county, and normal household refuse may not be dumped at those rubbish areas.

Hazardous items, explosives, chemicals, acids or other dangerous materials, are barred from both the containers and the rubbish areas. Section 12-65 permits the public to remove wood, lumber and boards from the four rubbish dumping sites, but otherwise bars entering, standing on, or rummaging through the containers or rubbish. Section 12-67 bars commercial haulers from dumping collected trash or debris, including rubbish, at county containers or rubbish areas, and Section 12-68 limits nonresident use, though a passing motorist may still empty up to one cubic foot of refuse per vehicle into a county container.
