Sonoma Garbage Collectors holds two free Spring/Fall cleanups (April and October) where SGC residential customers may set out one large item under 75 lbs plus up to ten bags; on-demand bulky pickup is also available for a fee at (707) 996-7555.
Bulky item disposal is administered by the franchised hauler under SMC Chapter 7.08 (which authorizes 'special collections' as a category of service). Per the City of Sonoma and Sonoma Garbage Collectors, residential SGC customers receive two community cleanup events per year β one in April (Spring) and one in October (Fall). During each event a residential customer may set out one bulky item weighing under 75 lbs plus up to ten bags of additional waste at no extra charge. Outside of those events, SGC will collect bulky items by appointment for an additional fee. Acceptable bulky items typically include furniture, mattresses, and similar oversized household items; California state law (Pub. Res. Code Β§42175 et seq.) bans televisions, monitors, and other 'covered electronic devices' from the trash, and SGC routes those to the County's Household Hazardous Waste / e-waste facility through Zero Waste Sonoma. Mattresses are recovered separately through the statewide Bye Bye Mattress program funded under Pub. Res. Code Β§42985.
Putting bulky items at the curb outside of a scheduled cleanup or appointment is a violation of SMC 7.08 (illegal placement of solid waste) and can be cited under SMC Ch. 1.28: $100 first, $200 second, $500 subsequent, plus cost-recovery for SGC's collection and disposal. Dumping a mattress or appliance on the street can also trigger Cal. Penal Code Β§374.3 (mandatory fines starting at $250 first conviction).
