Full Breakdown

Article II of Chapter 170, the Bristol Township Municipal Waste Management Ordinance, was adopted by the Township Council on 1-24-2008 as Ord. No. 2008-02. Section 170-14, amended 12-19-2013 by Ord. No. 2013-05, covers residential properties. Bristol Township, or an authorized person under contract with the Township, collects, transports, processes and disposes of all municipal waste generated at residential properties in the Township. If the Township or its contractor is not doing so, owners and occupants must contract directly with a licensed collector or licensed waste hauler.

The code does not print a collection calendar. It requires all persons owning and occupying residential properties to make municipal waste available for collection at the times and dates established by regulation, and all persons must provide a sufficient number of containers for collecting and storing waste.

Section 170-13(B) caps accumulation: no person owning or occupying property in the Township can permit municipal waste to build up for longer than seven days. Section 170-13(C) adds that waste must sit in covered receptacles with a tight and flyproof cover, and treats a menace to health and safety as presumed once more than seven days have passed.

Collection is paid for by a fee. Under § 170-16, the fee is established from time to time by resolution of the Council of the Township of Bristol, charged on each residential dwelling unit, and payable annually at the office of the Township Treasurer. The owner of every dwelling unit is legally obligated to see that it is paid. An account unpaid 60 days after the due date is delinquent, and service can be stopped at the direction of the Managing Director without further notice. The Township can also sue in assumpsit or file a lien.

Commercial, industrial, institutional and municipal establishments and multifamily housing properties are collected not less than once a week under § 170-15.

Violations & Fines

Under § 170-21, a violation of Article II is punishable on conviction by a fine of not more than $1,000 plus costs, with imprisonment not to exceed 30 days in default. Each day a violation continues is a separate offense. The Managing Director, the designee and sworn Township police officers enforce it under § 170-20.
