Mesa County, CO Trash & Recycling: Collection Schedule (2026)

Ordinance No. 15, Section 3.3, "Removal of rubbish," sets the mandatory minimum pickup frequency for unincorporated Mesa County. A residential owner, occupant or manager "must remove, or cause to be removed, from property, all accumulated rubbish not less than once each week." Businesses that generate food waste or other rubbish-producing byproducts face a stricter standard: they must remove it "not less than twice per week, timed so that rubbish cannot accumulate on the premises for longer than three and one-half days."

This is a maximum-accumulation rule rather than a county-run pickup schedule; Mesa County doesn't operate its own residential garbage trucks in unincorporated areas, so households typically contract with a private hauler, but whatever service they use has to keep pace with the ordinance's weekly, or twice-weekly for businesses, floor. Rubbish also has to go to an "approved disposal site" under Section 3.4, and storage in the meantime must use "tightly closed containers that will prevent easy entry by animals" per Section 3.2, so an owner can't satisfy the once-a-week rule by leaving open bags or loose piles between collections.

A property that repeatedly lets rubbish sit past the weekly or twice-weekly ceiling is treated the same as any other rubbish-accumulation violation: Code Compliance Services can issue the Section 4.1 Notice to Cure, escalate to a Notice of Violation, and ultimately seek an abatement warrant under Sections 5 and 6.
