Houston County, GA Trash & Recycling: Collection Schedule (2026)

Under General Code Sec. 50-42(b)(1), the county (through its franchisee, contract collector, or designee) collects garbage, yard waste and bulky waste once each week from every residential unit, while recyclable materials are picked up two times per month on regularly scheduled days. Section 50-42(a) makes the county's collection right exclusive within the solid waste district (all unincorporated county property per Sec. 50-39): no person may collect or dispose of residential solid waste except with the county's express permission. Waste hauled directly to the Houston County Landfill must be tarped or covered to keep it from blowing out en route.

The collector may decline pickup of containers larger than 100 gallons, containers with excessive liquid, or waste not properly placed by the collection day (Sec. 50-42(b)(2)); construction debris and commercial solid waste are excluded from county collection entirely (Sec. 50-42(b)(3)). 00, whichever is greater, applies under Sec. 50-43(d). Seniors 65 and older who are head of household and can show they dispose of garbage through a neighbor's or family member's container may obtain a full fee exemption under Sec. 50-45(a); hardship exemptions are available by petition to the board of commissioners under Sec. 50-45(b), effective for 12 months.
