Charlotte County, FL Trash & Recycling: Collection Schedule (2026)

Charlotte County Code § 4-4-24(a) requires that all rubbish, garbage, program recyclables and yard waste generated in the Sanitation Unit, which is the entire unincorporated county apart from Punta Gorda, Little Gasparilla Island, Bird Key, Palm Island and qualifying agricultural land, be collected only by a hauler holding the county's exclusive franchise agreement. Port Charlotte, Englewood, Rotonda and South Gulf Cove all fall inside the unit and have no city hall of their own to set separate rules. Section 4-4-24(c) ties enrollment to construction: the county will not issue a certificate of occupancy for new or changed-use residential property until the parcel appears on the current special-assessment roll for solid waste, or until the owner pays disposal and regulatory fees covering the gap before the roll updates.

Section 4-4-27(a)(1) makes subscription mandatory for every residential owner in the unit, funded through the annual special assessment set under § 4-4-23. ; commercial customers located more than two hundred feet from residential areas can be serviced at any reasonable time under § 4-4-26(d)(2). Section 4-4-24(g) bars private removal of rubbish or garbage except when a person or business hauls only waste generated on property it owns, using its own personnel and equipment; everyone else must use the franchisee or the designated disposal facility. Letting rubbish, garbage or refuse pile up on a residential lot for more than seven days is a declared public nuisance and a Code violation under § 4-4-27(a)(5), separate from the routine collection-day rules.
