Charlotte County, FL Trash & Recycling: Dumpster Rules (2026)

Article VI of Chapter 1-12 exists, per Sec. 1-12-113, to keep dumpsters, roll-off containers, compactors, and recycling dumpsters from being visible to the public. Sec. 1-12-114 applies the article to unincorporated Charlotte County, with new construction required to show compliant container placement during site plan review, though temporary containers used to hold construction waste on an active permitted project are exempt. Sec. 1-12-116 sets siting rules: mechanical containers must sit behind the trailing edge of the principal building, must be set back at least 10 feet from any canopy or overhang and at least 10 feet from side and rear lot lines, and cannot block parking spaces, walkways, fire lanes, driveways, rights-of-way, or easements; access routes need a 12-foot clear width and 50-foot turning radius for service vehicles.

Sec. 1-12-118 requires screening on any side visible from a public right-of-way, with the enclosure built to the container's height plus 6 to 12 inches, of concrete block, poured concrete, recycled plastic, or chain link with UV-resistant slats, and a gate if the visible side is also the collection access side. Sec. 1-12-119 requires a concrete pad at least 12 feet by 12 feet, at least 2 feet larger than a dumpster or recycling dumpster on all sides, and at least 4 feet larger for a roll-off container or compactor.
