Wayne County, NC Trash & Recycling: Collection Schedule (2026)

Section 62-27 of the Wayne County solid waste article sets the baseline removal schedule for residential garbage in the unincorporated county. Subsection (a) makes it unlawful for any owner, occupant, tenant or lessee of property to deposit, store or permit solid waste to accumulate there except in a manner the article prescribes. Subsection (b) then fixes the interval: garbage must be removed, or caused to be removed, from the property at least once each week, a seven-day period. That weekly cycle is also the reference point for the storage rules in subsection (c), which lets non-standard containers hold waste during the seven-day period if the waste is wrapped or bagged when the container lacks a flytight lid.

Disposal itself is restricted to specific outlets under subsection (g): a state-approved sanitary landfill, the county's own recycling and convenience centers, an approved incinerator, an approved demolition or construction landfill, or another method the state Department of Environment, Health and Natural Resources, the health director and the solid waste manager have approved, unless the resident is disposing of their own residential waste safely on their own property with health director approval. Wayne County itself does not appear to operate curbside pickup under this article; the weekly removal duty falls on the resident, who hauls waste to a county recycling and convenience center or landfill to meet the deadline.
