Trash and recycling in Jefferson County is tiered by service district. Inside the Urban Services District (old City of Louisville boundary prior to 2003 merger), Louisville Metro Public Works / Solid Waste Management Services provides weekly curbside trash, every-other-week recycling, and monthly junk set-out under LMCO Chapter 51. Outside the USD β the suburban and rural balance of Jefferson County β residents subscribe individually to licensed private haulers (Waste Management, Rumpke, Republic Services, Eco-Tech). All haulers operating in the county must be licensed with Metro Solid Waste Management Services. Incorporated 4th/5th/6th class cities inside the metro (St. Matthews, Jeffersontown, Shively, Anchorage, Prospect, Middletown) set their own collection contracts. Pickup typically starts at 6 AM; holiday weeks slide one day. Yard waste collected weekly April through November in USD.
