Recycling is voluntary in Columbia County; no ordinance requires households to recycle. Residents drop recyclables free at the county recycling center in Grovetown. The one legal mandate is keeping yard trimmings out of regular trash.
Georgia has no statewide residential recycling mandate, and Columbia County does not require households to recycle. Instead the county encourages recycling as policy and operates a drop-off recycling center at 1960 William Few Parkway in Grovetown, open Tuesday through Saturday, where residents can bring paper, cardboard, glass, aluminum, and plastics. The one diversion the code does require is yard trimmings: grass clippings, leaves, pine straw, shrubbery, and limbs may not be placed in or mixed with regular solid waste. Yard debris must be kept separate for composting, mulching, or other beneficial reuse, so it stays out of the landfill.
No penalty for choosing not to recycle. Mixing yard trimmings with regular solid waste is unlawful and a misdemeanor, with each day the violation continues a separate offense.
