Little Elm provides single-stream recycling collection every other week. Residents receive a 96-gallon recycling cart and are encouraged but not mandated to recycle accepted materials.
Little Elm offers single-stream curbside recycling through its contracted waste hauler. Accepted materials include paper, cardboard, aluminum and steel cans, glass bottles and jars, and plastics numbered 1 through 5 and 7. All recyclables go into a single 96-gallon cart without sorting. Materials must be clean and dry with food residue rinsed out. Contamination from non-recyclable items such as plastic bags, styrofoam, food-soiled paper, and garden hoses can cause an entire truckload to be diverted to the landfill. Recycling is collected every other week on the same day as regular trash. The town does not currently impose mandatory recycling requirements or fines for failure to recycle, but contamination of recycling carts with non-accepted materials may result in the hauler leaving the cart uncollected with a tag explaining the issue. The town encourages recycling through educational materials on the municipal website and periodic outreach events. Electronics and hazardous materials such as batteries, paint, and motor oil must be taken to a Denton County household hazardous waste collection event.
No fines for not recycling. Contaminated recycling carts may be left uncollected with an educational tag.
