Citrus County, FL Trash & Recycling: Yard Waste Collection (2026)

Citrus County Code § 82-76 defines 'yard trash' as vegetative matter from landscaping maintenance or land clearing, including tree and shrub trimmings, grass clippings, palm fronds, and trees and tree stumps, along with associated rocks and soils. A yard trash receptacle must hold no more than 45 gallons, be free of sharp or jagged edges, watertight, fitted with two handles or a bail, and covered with a tight-fitting, watertight lid; the total weight of the receptacle and its contents cannot exceed 50 pounds when full.

Yard trash that isn't in a receptacle must be securely tied or bundled, with each bundle also capped at 50 pounds, except Christmas trees are exempt from that bundling weight limit. Landscapers and lawn-maintenance businesses that haul yard trash away from a property are exempt from the county's collector-certification requirement under § 82-101(h)(1), provided everything they remove is disposed of at a landfill facility rather than dumped informally. Yard trash is classified in the code as a 'special waste' category alongside white goods and construction debris under § 82-76, distinguishing it from the biological, hazardous, or ordinary residential solid waste the standard collector handles under § 82-107. These container and bundling rules govern only unincorporated Citrus County properties; Crystal River and Inverness residents follow their own municipal yard-waste programs.
