Section 1-1703 defines a landmark tree as an individual tree or tree group identified as a unique community asset based on rarity, size, age, historical association or scenic contribution, and it must measure at least 30 inches diameter at breast height or 75 percent of the state champion of the same species. Section 1-1715 directs the tree board to maintain a municipal register and publish a current list. The city forester surveys for eligible trees and inspects designated ones yearly, recommending maintenance to owners. Once designated, a tree is subject to Chapter 17, including the abuse and mutilation rules in Section 1-1707(c).
Damaging, cutting or removing a designated landmark tree without the city forester's authorization violates Section 1-1707(c) and draws a civil fine per day under Section 1-1711(a).
