Columbia County recognizes historic and heritage trees in its development code. When a required parking layout would force removal of a historic or heritage tree, the administrator can adjust the landscaping or parking rules to save it. There is no homeowner heritage-tree program.
Columbia County's landscape ordinance gives historic and heritage trees special standing on development sites. Under Code Sec. 90-140, if meeting the minimum required parking would force removal of a historic or heritage tree, the administrator may modify the landscaping or parking requirements to preserve that tree. This protection operates during commercial and multi-family site design and review by Planning Services; it is not a countywide registry that restricts what a homeowner may do with a large tree on a single-family lot. Georgia has no statewide heritage-tree law, so outside the development process the fate of a specimen tree is left to the property owner and any HOA covenants.
On a development site, disregarding a preserved historic or heritage tree in an approved plan can stall plan approval and force redesign or replacement planting under Sec. 90-140.
