Chico, CA Tree Protection: Parkway Planting (2026)

Chico Municipal Code Chapter 14.40, the "Tree Law of the City of Chico," bars planting or removing trees and shrubs in any planting area, defined as the public right-of-way and the strip between the property line and street curb, without a written permit from the director, authorized by the Bidwell Park and Playground Commission or city council. Planting that conforms to the adopted street tree plan is deemed pre-authorized. The director may condition a removal permit on replanting, and unpermitted removal for an owner's convenience shifts the cost of replacement to that owner, collectible as a special assessment lien.
