Planting in the parkway (strip between curb and sidewalk) requires use of a species from the City's approved street tree list, minimum 15-gallon container, minimum 5'x5' or 4'x6' tree well, and written approval from the Streets Division Supervisor for any non-listed species.
Under the City of Lodi street tree planting standards published on the Public Works Trees page, only species on the approved street tree list (PDF updated 2/12/25) may be planted in the parkway. Selection criteria require trees to be 'deep-rooted and do not destroy sidewalks, sewers or water lines' and not a 'nuisance to public safety or health.' Minimum planting standards: 15-gallon container size; tree well minimum of 25 sq ft (5'x5') or 24 sq ft (4'x6'), with 36 sq ft (6'x6') up to 100 sq ft (10'x10') preferred. Trees planted under existing power lines must be low-growing species with mature height of 20-40 feet maximum, per the Lodi tree selection standards and consistent with the general principle in many California urban forestry codes against planting tall species under utility lines. Any other species may be permitted only if requested in writing and approved in writing by a Streets Division Supervisor. The abutting property owner is responsible for watering newly planted parkway trees (Tree Policy §I); the City handles all subsequent maintenance, trimming, spraying, and root surgery. Overhead clearance on trees over sidewalks must be at least 10 feet, and over streets at least 14 feet per the Tree Policy and Common Code Violations page (which also references the 13 ft vehicle clearance standard).
Planting an unapproved species or a tree below 15-gallon size without Streets Division approval is a code violation; the City may require removal at owner expense. Failure to maintain 10 ft sidewalk clearance or 14 ft street clearance on trees over public ways can trigger a notice to trim under Tree Policy enforcement; if not corrected, the City may trim the tree and charge costs back to the property owner.
